Irma La Douce (1963)

Irma La Douce has three things going for it in my opinion; that's Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine and Billy Wilder oh and it is set in Paris, so make that four. Oh yeah Tura Santana and Joan Shawlee are in it too, need I go on? Irma is a prostitute who happens to be the most sort after in all of Paris. Nester, played by Lemmon is a good natured policeman who feels it is his duty to eradicate all the street walking in Paris, however in the midst of this he falls for the girl in green, Irma.

In order to stop his beloved Irma from sleeping with every paying man in Paris, he takes on the guise of an English aristocrat, who will be her only client from now on.  This is a beautiful film to look at, I love the use of colour, and now feel I need to have even more green in my wardrobe (currently eyeing up green stockings on eBay). Shirley and Jack are just perfection together. Please do excuse the excessive amount of screen capping.

This is pretty much what the street was like when I stayed in Paris, except the ladies were not as well dressed.

I want an apartment like this, preferably whilst I jaunt around in this ensemble.

How perfect is this hat, I need to learn how to make pom poms, I have heard it is quite simple.

  1. Pom poms are definitely easy to make but very time consuming! I didn't get into this film quite as much as I wanted to but I did love all of the costumes and sets and colours.

  2. Think I am going to take a stab at making them some time soon, I am sure my efforts will end up looking like a 3 year old has done them mind. Yeah the plot is probably a bit silly for most! x

  3. This was one of my parents favourite films!
Shirley Maclaine was such a doll,I love this and Sweet Charity. Her hair in this is heavenly, the bow!OH! Her apartment is divine! I agree with you about the use of colour,it's really rather fabulous!
I do find Jack Lemmon a little annoying,I must say.But Shirley just steals the whole thing!
I have not yet made it to Paris!Hopefully in about 2 years! So jealous that you've been, but then it is just a hop, skip and a jump, isn't it?!
O,yes, pom poms are dead easy! There's probably a dozen tutorials on the net.x

  5. I love the screen shot with all the fruit in the background - so luscious! And I would love to have a signature colour like Irma has in the green, but then I would hate to have to pick one colour and exclude all the others!

  6. Helga: I had only heard about recently so glad I watched it, yeah I guess Lemmon is a required taste! You must see Paris I want to go back soon. Yeah I just need some spare time to make some and stick them on a hat and pretend I am Irma but without the street walking.xx

Carys: This will be perfect for you to get in Parisian mode oh and Amelie of course!

Miss Marie: It is beautiful isn't it. Yeah I could never stick to one colour maybe a week at a time then I may not take so long to decide what to wear in the morning hah.

  7. Wow! Love Shirley MacLaine's green outfits! I sometimes think it would be really fabulous to just wear one signature color all. the. time. I've actually never seen this! I'm going to go put it on my Netflix queue right now.

  9. Hi Hannah!! Great screen shots, I love the fruit one too. It reminds me that I have to go to the market because I'm out of fruit lol.

What a coincidence I just did a movie review with the same exact year. :)
